Don't have your own transport?

Don't worry.

If you want to explore all of the Dandenong Ranges, then by far the easiest way to travel is by car. If you don't have your own car, you can take a taxi or hire a car.


Taxis

A taxi from the airport or city to the top of the ranges at Olinda costs approximately AUD$90-$100.

Once on the mountain, you can hire a local taxi from Dandenong Ranges Taxi Services by calling 0419 516 280. Vintage Fun Hire Cars also offer an olde English cab service for restaurant transfers etc. You'll need to book 24 hours in advance by calling 9752 3366.


Hire Cars

Vintage Fun Hire Cars in Ferntree Gully offers chauffeur driven tours in 1920's Vintage Touring cars. Tours range from one hour to a full day. Picnic hampers available.

If you prefer to explore the Dandenongs yourself, you can hire a car from one of the car rental companies operating from the airport, city and surrounds including: Thrifty, Avis, and Budget.

Public Transport

If you want to be spared the expense of taking a taxi or hiring a car, it is possible to travel by public transport to a main village, such as Olinda (situated at the top of the ranges), where restaurants, specialty shops, public gardens, forest tracks and a golf course are all within easy walking distance from accommodation.

FROM CITY

To get to the Dandenongs from the city you can do the following:
  • Catch a train from Flinders Street Station to Belgrave (on the Belgrave line) by purchasing a 2 hour, Zone 1+2 ticket (at a cost of AUD$5.30 per adult). (Click here to go to the timetable.)
  • From Belgrave station take US Busline Route 694 to Olinda via Sherbrooke and Sassafras. (Click here to go to the timetable.)
  • If you'd like to visit Selby, Menzies Creek, Clematis, Emerald, Avonsleigh, Cockatoo or Gembrook, take US Busline Route 695 from Belgrave station. (Click here for a timetable.)
Alternatively, you can do the following:
  • Catch the Lilydale train to Croydon Railway Station from Spencer Street Station by purchasing a 2 hour, Zone 1+2 ticket (at a cost of AUD$5.30 per adult). (Click here to go to the timetable.
  • Then take the 688 MountDandyBus to Olinda via Montrose, Kalorama and Ridge Rd/William Rickett's Sanctuary. (Click here for timetable.)
Please note: Buses do not run on Sundays or public holidays.

FROM AIRPORT

If you're planning to take public transport from Tullamarine Airport you can do the following:
  1. Catch the Skybus from the airport to Spencer St Station at a cost of AUD$12.00 per person.
  2. Purchase a 2 hour, Zone 1+2 ticket (at a cost of AUD$5.30 per adult) and catch the Belgrave or Lilydale train. (See FROM CITY section for remaining instructions.)

Alternatively you can:

  1. Catch the Airport Bus (Eastside) from Tullamarine to Croydon Railway Station. (Click here for more information.)
  2. Purchase a 2-hour, Zone 2 ticket at a cost of AUD$2.50 and take the 688 MountDandyBus to Olinda. (Click here for timetable.)
